1,200 free meals offered while supplies last

FRANCES RUTH HARRIS - 10/14/2020

Milford. Twelve hundred free meals are being offered in two drive-through, contactless picks-up while supplies last. The Center for Developmental Disabilities (CDD) and local veterans’ groups are are offering food boxes through the USDA Farmers to Families program.

Just pull up, pop the trunk, and a box of frozen meat, a box of dairy, a box of produce and a gallon of milk will be placed in each vehicle’s trunk. The boxes are for residents of Pike County only (proof of residency is required).

CDD, located at 101 Pocono Drive in Milford is offering 400 meals from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24, in conjunction with Sysco Central Pennsylvania. Help is provided by Thermo King of Middletown, N.Y., which is providing the refrigerated trailer, and M&S Septic, which is towing the trailer. Volunteers are welcome. For more information call 570-296-3992.

The veterans’ drive-up is offering 800 meals. Distribution will start at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 22, at the American Legion Post 8612, located at 103 County Road 2001 in Milford. Heart2ServeU, Milford Rotary and Kilted Suds will help distribute meals.

Greg Protsko, Commander of Mountain Laurel VFW Post 8612, reached out to Sysco Central Pennsylvania to make the drive-up food pantry a reality. He worked with Connie Harvey, the American Legion Post 139’s Commander.

"The main reason that I signed up to have this food brought to Pike County was first, to help the families that use the food pantries,” Protsko said. "Secondly, to show the community that the VFW still tries to help the community and not just give speeches on holidays. We help both veterans and local families.”

Editor’s note: The original version of this story incorrectly stated that there would be a distribution at the American Legion on both Oct. 22 and Oct. 24, and that identification will not be required. Distribution at the American Legion will be on Oct. 22 only, and proof of Pike County residency will be required. The Courier regrets the errors.
